Sexism Sells?

If you thought that misogynist advertising was a thing of the past, think again. These 21st century adverts are a grim reminder that sexism is alive and well.

From a sexist car ad to a degrading wine advert, these advertisements serve as a reminder that, when it comes to the way we view and speak to and about women, we still have a very long way to go.

1/ BMW “You know you’re not the first, but do you really care?”


This BMW ad created in 2008 to help sell their used stock, caused outrage in the advertising world. Perhaps if instead of a young woman, there was a picture of a used BMW car, the ad would have made a good enticement for buying a second hand car.

2/ Dr. Pepper ‘It’s not for women’


Back in 2011, Dr. Pepper thought that their diet fizzy drinks only really appealed to the ladies. So, the ad executives chose to make the diet drinks seem exclusively male by branding them ‘not for women’. Um okay, because that made sense.

3/ Premier Estates Wine #TasteTheBush


In 2015, ASA banned a sexist and degrading advert created by an Australian wine company.

In a statement, the ASA said “Most viewers would understand the claim “some say you can almost taste the bush” to be a reference to oral sex, particularly given that it was accompanied with the image on the wine glass position directly in front of the woman’s crotch.”
